So many things we used to do in years gone by, were for the mutual benefit of us as well as the wildlife. Take coppicing Hazel for instance, we used to make it a rotation crop so we could benefit from nice straight wooden poles while also letting wildlife flourish with more sunlight & food.
Our gardens were & sometimes are, manicured masterpieces for ourselves to look at. We are getting better at keeping things & managing our gardens for wildlife but there’s still lots we can do. We don’t have to cut back every winter or keep our whole lawns at a nice short length.
What about putting in a pond? A hibernaculum? A dead hedge? None of these things have to be huge, they can be tailored to the size of your garden or space you have.
Let’s change things up. Let flora and fauna live alongside us again like it always used to.
